Pretty sure anyone who's not a native New Englander wonders what the heck the Horribles' IS. And maybe there are a few native New Englanders who don't know what the heck it is. So we've done a little research:
The "Antique and Horrible" parade developed in the 1800s as a parody or satire of patriotic parades honoring military officers and politicians by the Ancient and Honorable Artillery (founded 1638). The working class citizens (apparently, of Lowell, MA) would dress in raggedy clothes, ride old nags, dress as women (the idea!)....to parody the solemn ceremonies of the Ancient & Honorable. Initially informal, they became more organized over time and in most cases took place on or around the 4th of July.
Most Horribles disappeared in the late 19th to early 20th century, but some towns/areas kept up the tradition (Beverly Farms' is a particularly raucous & politically pointed parade going on since 1888), some became less political and more family-friendly, and some became associated with other holidays (Halloween, Labor Day). The Sand Hills Scituate Horribles takes place the Sunday before Labor Day every year.
The Humarock Horribles parade is a family-friendly parade beginning at 4th Cliff on the Saturday before Labor Day every year. Organized and presented by the South Humarock Civic Association since ~the 1950s, the parade celebrates the unique Humarock community, with no set theme, but a host of costumed and non-costumed walkers and floats, bands and participants. Traditionally, parade'rs throw candy into the crowds lining the parade route, and the SHCA collects donations as well. All interested parties are welcome to join as the parade proceeds down Central Ave from 4th Cliff, picking up more floats/participants at the fire station. We continue down River St to Alden, looping up Alden to Ocean Dr and down Julian, to end in front of the SHCA clubhouse at 8 Julian St...where hot dogs, drinks and Hoodsies await!
